The Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, has ordered the reopening of courts in the Upper East Region which were closed due to the escalating Bawku conflict.
the High, Circuit and District courts in Bolgatanga , District courts in Zuarungu, Zebilla, Garu and Bongo respectively were shut down on October 29 on the orders of the chief justice In order to ensure safety of judges, staff, lawyers and court users, following
heightened insecurity in the upper east region as a result of a deadly gunfire attack by unidentified gunmen who opened fire on travellers along the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway on Sunday, October 27, 2024.
However residents in Bolgatanga, Zuarungu, and Bongo expressed dissatisfaction about the directive and immediately petitioned the Chief Justice to reopen, the courts arguing that they were several kilometres away from the conflict zone.
A statement dated November 8 issued and signed by the Judicial Service Secretary, Justice Cyra Pamela Koranteng JA, directed registrars of the various courts to take notice and start operations
