A video has emerged online of illegal miners(galamsey) moving their excavators from their galamsey sites after President Akufo-Addo’s directive.

The illegal miners in the Manso area of the Ashanti region began moving several excavators from their site. One galamsey speaking in Twi said, “ We didn’t hear good news this evening, they say operation, the machines are leaving, machines about 20 we are going to park them”.

In a press statement dated yesterday, October 9, 2024, the President directed the Minister for Defence to deploy additional military forces to intensify the ongoing “Operation Halt”, which aims to curb illegal mining activities.

Part of the statement read, “The operation will be bolstered by the deployment of naval boats on polluted river bodies to ensure the immediate cessation of all mining activities, legal or illegal, in and around these water bodies.”

President Akufo-Addo also expressed his commitment to end illegal mining and called on all Ghanaians to unite in the fight.
