Tensions are escalating between occupants of a resettlement community in the Okere District of the Eastern Region and the indigenes of Awukugua over ownership of the VRA Quarters land.
The incident occurred during the launch of “Ebefura 2025,” when a fully armed group from Awukugua stormed the town, engaging in sporadic gunfire and assaulting some elderly residents of Adukrom VRA Quarters.
Elders and opinion leaders have expressed their fears, stating they cannot predict the next move from the chiefs of Awukugua.
The chief and residents of Adukrom VRA Quarters claim they are constantly under siege from traditional authorities and local residents, who are demanding they vacate the area and preventing them from undertaking any development projects.
The current occupants of Adukrom VRA Quarters were relocated to this site in 1964 during the construction of the Akosombo Dam. Despite several attempts to engage the Volta River Authority (VRA) for intervention, the affected residents have found no resolution.
Nana Obiri Asare Atakorah III, chief of Adukrom VRA Quarters and Adukrom Mponuahene, urged the government, the Okere District Assembly, and the VRA to take proactive measures in engaging with the leadership of both host and settler communities to find an amicable resolution to land disputes.
He highlighted the ongoing antagonism between host landowners and resettled communities in various parts of the country, particularly in the Okere District, following the construction of the Akosombo Dam in 1960.
