The Tano River located in the southern eastern part of Ghana is suffering heavy pollution as Chinese miners keep washing mining residue into it (Tano).
The Chinese miners are washing mining residue not only into the Tano, but Aboaya and Bena Rivers close so Samreboi in the Western Region.
Tests conducted for arsenic and chromium registered levels of 0.346 and 0.187mg/L for respective chemicals, and increase of 592 and 274 percent above the WHO 0.050mg/L accepted levels, raising high levels of safety concerns.
In 2022 joy news captured a mining site belonging to Akonta mining limited whose mining residue was being channeled into the Tano River, two years down the line, Chinese miners have taken over the site, following suit and polluting the river further.
Alhaji Mohammed Salisu Abu is an opinion leader as Samreboi who shared his frustration over the level of pollution. “First, anywhere you will reach in the forest or bush, you will get a stream, sit down and fetch water and drink but now, you won’t get it,” he said.
He expressed disappointment over government’s failure to combat the menace of illegal mining upon all its promises and President Akufo-Addo putting his presidency on the line over the subject.
