Kwaku Ansah Asare, former Director of the Ghana School of Law, has called for the impeachment of President Nana Akufo-Addo, accusing him of failing to fulfill his promise to end illegal mining (galamsey) in Ghana.
In a recent interview, Mr. Ansah Asare criticized the President for not delivering on his 2017 commitment to put his job on the line to eradicate the menace.
“This is one good reason the President should have been impeached long ago,” the legal scholar remarked, emphasizing that Akufo-Addo’s inaction, particularly with government officials allegedly involved in galamsey, has been deeply disappointing.
He questioned why ministers linked to the illegal mining activities have not been held accountable.
According to Mr. Ansah Asare, Ghanaians have not sufficiently demanded accountability from the government, allowing leadership to act with “impunity.”
He argued that President Akufo-Addo continues to escape responsibility because “there is no one to call him to order.”
His comments add to the renewed debate about the effectiveness of the government’s fight against illegal mining, as the destructive practice continues to harm the environment and local communities. Calls for accountability in addressing the galamsey crisis grow louder amid widespread frustration over the perceived lack of progress.
