62-year-old Madam Naa Densua, one of the Conveners of the #StopGalamseyNow demonstration, is urgently calling for the release of 8-year-old Rose, who was taken into custody by police at the 37 Roundabout during the protest.
A major scuffle broke out on Sunday, September 22, between protesters from the Democracy Hub and the Ghana Police Service during a demonstration in Accra.
The chaos occurred on the second day of a three-day protest organized to express dissatisfaction with what participants describe as economic mismanagement and other pressing national issues.
Despite prior police warnings against gathering in the same location, several protesters, including young Rose, were arrested. An estimated 20 individuals were detained, although the police have yet to confirm the exact number or the charges.
The demonstration initially focused on the economic crisis but later shifted to anti-galamsey (illegal mining) issues.
The protest is being led by legal practitioner Oliver Barker-Vormawor, who aims to push for reforms believed to improve governance for the betterment of the Ghanaian people. The group has vowed to persist with their demands to ensure that the concerns of citizens are addressed.
Unlike the first day’s disruptions, traffic at the 37 Roundabout remained fluid today. Madam Naa Densua has urged all well-meaning Ghanaians to stand with them in their cause.
