Former Ghanaian President and NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama countered claims by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who suggested that Mahama’s potential single term might lack sufficient motivation to drive substantial change. Dr. Bawumia argued that, unlike an incumbent eligible for re-election, Mahama may not have the necessary drive to deliver impactful policies for Ghanaians within four years.
Addressing the public, Mahama refuted this by emphasizing that “four years of effective leadership is far better than eight years under a leader who falls short.” He expressed that his aim, should he return to office, would focus on creating a lasting legacy rather than seeking personal gain or re-election.
Mahama, who already enjoys the privileges associated with being a former president, stated that his motivations are shaped by a desire to serve and leave behind a transformative impact. He underscored his commitment to tackling Ghana’s pressing issues, with a particular focus on improving economic stability and fighting corruption. In his view, the upcoming term would be an opportunity to lay down enduring reforms that would resonate long after his time in office, pushing back against the notion that only leaders seeking re-election can make a difference.
