Korkor Laurette Asante, the member of parliament for Atiwa West Constituency, has launched a scathing attack on the John Mahama-led government over its failure to deliver the Women’s Development Bank they promised women.

It will be recalled that the NDC in opposition promised the establishment of a Women’s Development Bank as one of their key campaign commitment.

According to Korkor Laurette Asante, the NDC in opposition promised to ease burdens, but Ghanaians are now seeing an economic betrayal.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament during a debate on the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review, the Korkor Laurette Asante stated, “Mr Speaker, the NDC, when they were in opposition, said they would reduce taxes and ease burdens. But what we’re seeing is economic betrayal dressed up as economic policy”.

“Mr Speaker, the government promised a Women’s Development Bank as a flagship intervention to support our women. All the women, including those in Abomosu, the traders in Kwabeng, and the market women in Bansu, were looking forward to this”, she lamented.

Korkor Laurette Asante further fired shots at the GHS51million allocated to the Women’s Development Bank.

She added, “Mr Speaker, only paltry GHS51million was going to be used as seed money; even that amount, we have heard nothing since. Not a single mention of the women’s bank was made in this mid-year budget review”.

Mr Speaker, to set up a Bank in Ghana, you need a minimum of  GHS400 million as capital. Where were told legal framework was being done, preparatory work was underway, but six months down the line, there is no bank, no legal structure, no implementation plan, not even a mention in the mid-year budget”.

Korkor Laurette Asante quizzed the speaker, “Mr Speaker, where is the women’s bank? This so-called women’s bank has become a ghost — budgeted in hoop and buried in silence.

Clearly, Mr Speaker, the government is unable to deliver, or they just don’t have the will or Killer Ntua, so Mahama ntua?. The women’s development bank is Yamutu”, she boldly stated.

The lawmaker further criticised the Mahama government for discontinuing some of the Akufo-Addo government’s initiatives.

She added, “ It is deeply alarming as well that the government has discontinued impactful programs like Youstart, 1D1F. Mr Speaker 1D1F was aimed at centralising industrialisation and creating rural jobs. They have removed that, and they have not replaced it with any viable program; those programs were not only slogans”.
