The brother of late Akwatia MP Ernest Yaw Kumi has broken his silence following his passing.
According to him, Ernest Yaw Kumi complained of pains in his heart and was rushed to the hospital.
Ernest Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025.
The cause of death for the late Mr Kumi is yet to be officially confirmed.
“He came this morning and complained of pains in his heart. We rushed him to the hospital, and he was given a drip, but he was unresponsive. Later, his wife was informed that he had passed,” he told journalists on Monday, July 7, 2025.
He revealed that about two weeks ago, Ernest had planned to visit Akwatia but couldn’t make the trip, asking someone to represent him instead.
“Two weeks ago, he was supposed to come to Akwatia, but he couldn’t make it, so he asked someone to come in his stead. So, it’s been a while since he came over,” he added.
The grieving brother described Ernest Kumi as more than just a politician; he was the strength of their family.
“Indeed, we have lost a gem. He was a pillar in the family. As a family, we are devastated by the loss,” he said.
Ernest Kumi was serving as a first-term member of parliament after his victory in the 2024 elections.
He secured the seat for the NPP in a closely contested election marked by allegations of vote buying, irregularities at some polling stations, with his victory ending up in the court.
The lawmaker’s death comes just weeks after the Supreme Court overturned his contempt conviction related to the disputed 2024 parliamentary election results.
The late Ernest Kumi, in February 2025, was found guilty by the Koforidua High Court after he defied an interim injunction barring him from presenting himself for swearing-in as an MP.
The Koforidua High Court issued a bench warrant for his arrest, alluding to his failure to attend court hearings and his disregard for the court’s authority.
