Kwesi Pratt Jnr, a veteran journalist and Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, has jabbed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) members of parliament following their petition to the presidency.
The NPP MPs, a week ago, walked out of the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review in parliament to go and present a petition to the presidency on the menace of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
The NPP’s petition focus is the escalating galamsey crisis, which the Minority describes as an ecological emergency and a national betrayal.
The Caucus cited data from A Rocha Ghana and Global Forest Watch showing a 17% increase in river turbidity and a 9% loss in forest cover in just six months.
They named the rivers Pra, Offin, Ankobra, and Birim as being under serious threat.
The NPP MPs also accused government and NDC officials of complicity, alleging an agreement between District Chief Executives, security officers, and illegal miners.
They are demanding:
“A State of Emergency in all illegal mining zones
A repeal of Legislative Instrument 2462, which they say enables illegal mining
Swift prosecution of all public officials found complicit
The formation of an independent national oversight body involving civil society, traditional leaders, and religious groups
The launch of a National Environmental Recovery Programme, focused on afforestation and river restoration”.
Kwesi Pratt, reacting to the NPP’s petition, wrote on X, “The New Patriotic Party (#NPP) was in power for eight long years ending on January 7, 2025.
At the beginning of his tenure as President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, @NakufoAddo The candidate of the New Patriotic Party (#NPP), said he was ready to put his position on the line in the fight against illegal mining (Galamsey)”.
He recounted, “By the end of his presidency, #galamsey had virtually destroyed all or most water bodies in the country, and cocoa production had fallen by as much as 50% as a direct consequence of illegal mining.
Less than 7 months into the rule of the new administration headed by John Dramani Mahama(@JDMahama. On July 24, 2025, Members of Parliament of the NPP present a petition to the seat of government complaining about the slow pace of the fight against galamsey.
They hold the Mahama administration responsible for the failure to uproot galamsey.
Whaaaat?
This is certainly very interesting”.
