Dr Charles Wereko-Brobby, a former Board Chairman of the Volta River Authority (VRA), has boldly told the minority in parliament to shut up and account for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) stewardship under them.

According to him, the minority in parliament must shut up after they failed to hold the culprits accountable when their party was in power.

Speaking on TV3, Dr Charles Wereko-Brobby detailed, “The Minority in Parliament should shut up because the problems we are facing are largely due to the Minority’s failure to act or act irresponsibly when they were in government.

“All that is happening in Parliament is an attempt to try and really instigate election 2024 and try to give the impression that everything that is being done successfully under Mahama either started from NPP or was due to some things that we are not convinced about,” he expressed.

He called on the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, to account for the losses at the ECG during his tenure as the Board Chairman.

According to Charles Wereko-Brobby, Afenyo Markin has no moral right to criticise the government over its implementation of the GH¢ 1 fuel levy until he accounts for the losses incurred under the ECG during his tenure in 2023 and 2024.

He added, “The only thing I’ll ask the Minority Leader is that he should account for his stewardship of ECG in 2023, 2024. If he is able to account for the huge losses that ECG incurred under his stewardship, we may begin to listen to him”.

“The irresponsible management of ECG, which has brought in tremendous debts over the last two years of 2023 and 2024, that mismanagement should not be charged to the tariffs, but it should be charged to those who are responsible for mismanaging ECG and superintending over ECG over the last two years.

We know who was superintending over ECG, who are now pretending to let us know what the right thing is to do. If you want to know who superintended over ECG, I think you’d better go and find out,” he continued.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has announced the implementation of the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1141).

According to the GRA, starting July 16, 2025, Ghanaians will pay GHC1 more per litre of fuel as under the new Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025, passed under a certificate of urgency in Parliament.

The GRA has directed all stakeholders to take note of the new date and ensure full compliance with the provisions of the amended law.

However, a new poll by Global InfoAnalytics shows that the majority of Ghanaians support the GHC 1 increase in petroleum tax to deal with the country’s energy crisis.

The poll shows that 55% of voters support the suspended ‘Dumsor’ Levy, while 22% oppose it. 23% were neutral.

The Energy Sector Levy Amendment Bill 2025 introduces a GH¢1 increase in the levy on petroleum products.

John Mahama, upon assenting to it, asserted that the energy sector debt has been the actual scale of economic growth and sustainability for many years.

According to him, the Energy Sector Levy is to eliminate the energy sector debts and stop the crisis in the energy sector.
