President John Dramani Mahama has urged the newly appointed justices of the Supreme Court to protect the courts from political interference, economic manipulation, and public intimidation..
According to John Mahama, the newly appointed justices of the Supreme Court must go beyond procedural technicalities and focus on delivering real and accessible justice to Ghanaians.
Speaking at the official swearing-in ceremony held at the Jubilee House on Thursday, July 3, President Mahama stated, “We must protect our courts from political interference, economic manipulation, and public intimidation. An independent Judiciary is not a threat to government; it is a partner in nation-building.
We need Justices who are not swayed by popularity or pressure but are anchored in the Constitution, but driven by a journey in the desire to uphold justice without fear or favour”.
John Mahama added, You’re expected to serve not as arbiters of technicalities, but as stewards of justice and conscience”.
“Yours is not only a legal role, but a moral responsibility to safeguard our constitution’s spirit and interpret it in ways that advance the common good and protect the most vulnerable in our society.”
“All of you come onto the Supreme Court with vast experience and a solid knowledge of the law, and are deserving of this high office,” he stated.
“It is to this court that people turn when their freedoms are threatened, when justice seems distant, or when the complexities of modern governance test the Constitution,” he said.
The seven new Supreme Court Justices are:
Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei
Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh
Justice Senyo Dzamefe
Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo
Justice Philip Bright Mensah
Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo
Justice Hafisata Amaleboba
Meanwhile, Sheikh Abubakar Ahmed Kamaldeen, the National Imam of Shia, has slammed both the New patriotic Party (NPP) and now the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their constant manipulation of the judiciary.
He noted that Ghana’s judiciary is in a bad shape because of the manipulation of the political parties.
Sheikh Abubakar Ahmed Kamaldeen slammed the NDC and John Mahama, who were advocating for a cap in the appointment of Justices for the Supreme Court in opposition, but now doing the opposite in government.
Speaking at the Islamic National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving in Accra, Sheikh Kamaldeen cried out, “Our judiciary is in a bad shape because of the manipulation of the political parties”.
He continued, “Barely one year ago, the NDC was advocating for a cap in the appointment of Justices for the Supreme Court, only for our President to appoint seven of them just recently.”
”As a result, many people don’t have confidence in the Judiciary because of the manipulation of the political parties.
Change the attitude of first, the executive to leave the judiciary alone. They must be independent, and they must be allowed to do their work without interference from the executives and the political parties”, he added.
