Charlotte Osei, the former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, has said the late President John Evans Atta Mills would be outraged at how galamsey is damaging Ghana’s environment.
According to Charlotte Osei, the current developments reflect a blunt difference to the morals and ideologies the late President Mills stood for.
On Tuesday, July 22, Charlotte Osei, delivering the keynote address at the 13th Anniversary Commemorative Lecture of the late president, stated, “As we honour Prof’s memory, we must also commit ourselves to continue his work. This is not just a responsibility of those who knew him personally, but of all Ghanaians and Africans who shared his vision of a better future.
“I have wondered many times if Prof would be happy with us. I think he would be outraged at how we are permitting galamsey to damage our environment and our future,” she said.
She added, “Prof would also be happy that his wife and family are still thriving. He would be pleased that many of his learners and mentees are leading lights in business, the legislature, and the executive.
I think he would be happy that the party for which he made so much sacrifice is back in power, and happy that we have the first female Vice President”.
In a related news on galamsey, Professor Eric Abavare, the president of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), KNUST Chapter, has boldly told President John Dramani Mahama he is a conman.
The KNUST UTAG President accused John Mahama of lacking sincerity in the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
Professor Eric Abavare, speaking on Citi News, described President Mahama’s stance as deceitful.
He boldly stated, “Mr. President, I do not want to use the word that you are a conman, but from the actions so far, it is evident that you are a conman.
“You are a conman in the sense that the alacrity and pragmatism with which you exhibited prior to the election are not the same,” he charged.
Professor Eric Abavare added, “It means that you have some interest. I do not want to be told that because of the GoldBod, gold exploration and gold mining, but that cannot equate the danger”.
He further alleged that Mahama’s ties to gold mining entities may be muddying the government’s position.
Meanwhile, the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) have started mounting pressure on President John Dramani Mahama to fulfil his pre-election galamsey pledges.
UTAG, in a statement released on Thursday, July 17, threatened to trigger an industrial action if John Mahama does not fulfil his pledges.
According to UTAG, the Mahama government lack concrete progress in the fight against galamsey.
UTAG recalled that John Mahama, in opposition before the 2024 election, signed the National Pledge Against Illegal and Irresponsible Mining, which they say he is yet to fulfil.
