Solomon Owusu, a leading member of the Movement for Change, has said the Office of the Special Prosecutor must invite former President Akufo-Addo for questioning.
According to Solomon Owusu, in the National Cathedral audit report, the secretariat denied making payment of some funds and pointed fingers at the former president, Akufo-Addo.
Speaking on TV3 Key Point, Solomon Owusu stated, “The Office of the Special Prosecutor at one point invited President John Mahama and questioned him. This is an opportunity for this administration to also question Nana Akufo-Addo.
In one of the responses, they started making payments way ahead of even signing the agreement, and when the secretariat where asked, they said they didn’t know anything about it was His Excellency. They mentioned Nana Akufo-Addo’s name that he engaged them and started paying.
I totally disagreed with anyone who said we should go ahead with this cathedral business. If my candidate were in power, what we would have done was to is to have a very big billboard at the site and write ‘how not to govern a country’.
He added, “ If we were going to add the demolition of the land to the $97 million, we would be running into $200 million, without anything”.
“We must confront them. When we confront people, they say we should not touch the anointing. We will touch your annointing because this is how annointing is, then it is a very bad annointing.
We have to touch because some anointed are very bad. Who are the anointed? These are not Prophets. You are claiming that when we go to Rome, you will see that Cathedrals are people in Rome are sleeping on their bellies to go to school or to write”.
Solomon Owusu added, “Go and see the roads that we pile on $97 million, the contractor between Amasaman and Nsawam is demanding $45 million, is that not the case we have used 97 million to sink a hole, is it not pathetic and this is a party that is telling you that we should give them an opportunity to come and lead us again.
So that they can come and dig holes, that will not happen, we must not allow it is pathetic.
But on the basis of the management letters alone, without any forensic audit it is enough to indict a lot of people. People must be lined up and prosecuted”.
Meanwhile, Kwame Jantuah, a leading member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), also echoed the same sentiment.
He boldly stated that former president Akufo-Addo must answer questions on how 97million was spent on the National Cathedral.
According to Kwame Jantuah, the National Cathedral project caused financial loss to the state.
Kwame Jantuah stated, “Call Former President Akufo-Addo and question him on the National Cathedral issues. Something should be done, and we shouldn’t leave it like that. He should explain how the money has been spent”.
“Let the Attorney-General take it up and question him,” he added.
Their comments come on the back of Felix Kwakye, who yesterday, July 18, revealed that documents show Ghana owes the National Cathedral contractor an additional $39 million, raising the total project cost to $97 million, far above the widely cited $58 million.
The Minister of State in Charge of Communication, addressing the media on Friday, July 18, 2025, stated, “Contrary to the widely held view that total payments and contributions to the National Cathedral project amount to $58 million, there is actually an additional outstanding payment of $39 million to the contractor.
When added, this brings the total cost incurred so far for the hole that sits at the site of the project to $97 million”.
Felix Kwakye added, “The above audit findings rock the very foundation of the project and the work of the Secretariat and raise serious questions about the use of public funds”.
The National Cathedral Ghana was registered limited by guarantee company. In view of that, the Attorney General has been directed to take legal steps… and we expect that to be done in the coming days,” he said.
Felix Kwakye further revealed that despite the damning findings contained in the Deloitte audit report, it did not cover the full scope of operations of the National Cathedral Secretariat and the project itself.
He revealed that the Auditor-General has therefore been requested to commission a forensic audit into the National Cathedral Project and the activities of the Secretariat.
