Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has exposed the New Patriotic Party for lying to Ghanaians about boycotting the Ablekuma North rerun.
According to Mustapha Gbande, the NPP is actively campaigning at night in the constituency despite claims of boycotting the rerun.
Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mustapha Gbande stated, “The NPP is part of the election but is lying to Ghanaians about boycotting. They are disingenuous and go to campaign at night”.
“The NPP should be bold enough to write to the Electoral Commission and officially inform them that they are withdrawing so their candidate’s name can be taken off the ballot paper,” he stated.
He added, “After an assessment, they have realised their candidate will lose and wish to change her but can’t. They know she did nothing as an ambassador, and even as a former MP, she has no track record. That’s why she lost the primaries in 2020.”
“Ablekuma North was one of the constituencies the NDC won, but the NPP wanted to use police intimidation to snatch it from us. That won’t work”.
The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana announced that it will conduct a rerun of the Parliamentary Election in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency.
The EC decided to rerun the election in 19 of the 37 polling stations, citing that although the scanned results from these stations were approved by both party agents, they lacked verification by the Presiding Officers.
The rerun in Ablekuma North is scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025.
However, the NPP Deputy General Secretary, Haruna Mohammed, has reiterated that the NPP won’t contest an election that we have won.
According to Haruna Mohammed, the NPP won the Ablekuma North parliamentary elections and won’t contest in any rerun organised by the Electoral Commission.
Speaking after the ruling on Citi Eyewitness News, NPP Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed stated that the party maintains its belief that it legitimately won the original election and sees no reason to re-contest.
“We think that we have won the election. The law will definitely speak on this particular matter. We don’t go to contest for an election that we have won,” Mohammed said.
“We intend to pursue further the case in court, and at any point in time, the remedy that the court will proffer, we as a law-abiding party, a corporate institution — the NPP — will follow suit,” he stated.
Meanwhile, reports suggest, an NPP presidential candidate hopeful, Bryan Acheampong, has donated GHs200,000 to Akua Afriyie, $6,500 to coordinators and polling station chairpersons in Ablekuma North to support the rerun.
