Rodaline Imoru Ayarna, a Public interest advocate, have advised the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rethink their decision and allow their constituents to cast their vote.
According to Rodaline Imoru Ayarna, the NPP’s decision to boycott the Ablekuma North could shift the balance of power in Ghana’s Parliament.
Speaking on TV3’s New Day on Thursday, July 10, Rodaline Imoru Ayarna stated, “Some of their members are saying that one seat won’t make much of a difference. But looking at the numbers in Parliament now, one seat will make a great deal of difference because the NDC is expecting that one seat to get a two-thirds majority”.
“It would be sad if we should go into it without them, and then let’s say that the voting becomes like 34,000, and then you go and get 200. It goes into our history books regardless of the fact that you boycotted,” Rodaline Imoru Ayarna cautioned.
She noted, “In 1992, they wrote a stolen verdict and then, when they sat back and reflected, they realised they made mistakes and it was wrong. They should have gone.”
“Politics is a game, and it’s a game of numbers. So, why are you denying your constituents or your supporters of going to, you know, vote? That is not fair. So, it’s very important for them to go there to exercise their franchise, and their constituents would want to do the same.”
However, the NPP Deputy General Secretary, Haruna Mohammed, has reiterated that the NPP won’t contest an election that we have won.
According to Haruna Mohammed, the NPP won the Ablekuma North parliamentary elections and won’t contest in any rerun organised by the Electoral Commission.
Speaking after the ruling on Citi Eyewitness News, NPP Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed stated that the party maintains its belief that it legitimately won the original election and sees no reason to re-contest.
“We think that we have won the election. The law will definitely speak on this particular matter. We don’t go to contest for an election that we have won,” Mohammed said.
“We intend to pursue further the case in court, and at any point in time, the remedy that the court will proffer, we as a law-abiding party, a corporate institution — the NPP — will follow suit,” he stated.
Justin Kodua Frimpong, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has also boldly stated that the party will not go for any rerun in the 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency.
According to Justin Kodua, the NPP won the Ablekuma North Constituency with a margin of 414 votes.
He further asserted that the electoral commission’s decisions are unjust and should act in accordance with the facts and evidence presented during the electoral process.
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, July 8, Justin Kodua stated, “For us in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) resolute and we know that our candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, won the elections with a margin of 414 votes. This is based on facts and figures. Yesterday, when the National Executive Committee met, we said that under no circumstances will we be intimidated.
“Under no circumstances will we go for a rerun. We will not go for any rerun. The New Patriotic Party will not go for any rerun. We have won the elections. What we are asking the Electoral Commission to do is to follow the court’s directive to finish the collation and declare our candidate, Akua Afriyie, as the MP for Ablekuma North,” the NPP General Secretary declared.
Meanwhile, the High Court dismisses Akua Afriyie’s 10-day interim injunction application against EC’s order to rerun 19 polling stations at the Ablekuma North Constituency.
