Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, the president of the Ghana Journalist Association, has stated that the police officer who slapped a journalist at Ablekuma will live to regret.
According to the GJA president, the police cannot take journalists for granted.
He boldly asserted that, when police arrest suspects in Ghana, they give details, but they have refused to give details about their own officer.
It will be recalled that the interdicted officer slapped Banahene Agyekum, a journalist with GH One Television, during the re-run of the parliamentary elections in Ablekuma North.
Speaking in an interview with UTV, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour stated, “Mark this day down, he will live to regret…The police cannot take us for granted. They knew that usually cases of this nature do die down just after a few weeks, hence their swift action to interdict him”.
“When the police arrest suspects in this country, their names and other details are provided, but when their own officer wearing a uniform was captured in a video assaulting a journalist, they refused to give details about him”. He continued.
Police officer facing criminal charges
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has filed criminal charges against a senior officer caught on camera assaulting a GHOne journalist during the Ablekuma North rerun.
According to the Accra Regional Police Command, they have launched investigations into the Ablekuma North rerun violence.
Superintendent Juliana Obeng emphasised that they are examining several videos capturing assaults and disturbances.
The police revealed that the assaulted victims have been issued Police Medical Report Forms.
Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, in a statement, wrote, “The Command has progressed to obtain statements from complainants and witnesses to aid in the ongoing investigations”.
“We encourage the public to cooperate with the Police and share any credible information by contacting us on emergency numbers 18555 or 191,” the statement added.
