Sylvester Tetteh, a former deputy minister of information, has said President John Mahama’s fuel levy should be called a demonic levy.
Sylvester Tetteh boldly claimed that the new fuel levy, commonly known as the dumsor levy, will destroy the country.
According to Sulvester Tetteh, if elections were held today, the NPP would win hands down.
Speaking in an interview on Sompa FM/TV, Sylvester Tetteh stated, “The new fuel levy should be called a demonic levy. It will destroy this country if we don’t stop it now. It is not sustainable, and ordinary people are suffering,” he lamented.
“Let me ask you — are you satisfied with what Mahama is doing? This country has been pushed backwards by managerial incompetence.”
“He himself said he has too many Members of Parliament to give jobs to — and that tells you how useless many of them are in helping move this country forward.”
“If elections were held today, the NPP would win hands down”, he boldly claimed.
However, a new poll by Global InfoAnalytics shows that the majority of Ghanaians support the GHC 1 increase in petroleum tax to deal with the country’s energy crisis.
The poll shows that 55% of voters support the suspended ‘Dumsor’ Levy, while 22% oppose it. 23% were neutral.
The Energy Sector Levy Amendment Bill 2025 introduces a GH¢1 increase in the levy on petroleum products.
John Mahama, upon assenting to it, asserted that the energy sector debt has been the actual scale of economic growth and sustainability for many years.
According to him, the Energy Sector Levy is to eliminate the energy sector debts and stop the crisis in the energy sector.
Also, Julie Kozack, the Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Communications Department, has backed the government’s Energy Sector Shortfall and Debt Repayment Levy.
The IMF asserted that the GH¢1 fuel levy is a strategic measure aligned with the country’s fiscal goals under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme.
According to Julie Kozack, the measure will bolster Ghana’s ability to deliver on the fiscal objectives under the programme.
Speaking at a press briefing, Julie Kozack stated, “On the fuel levy, what I can say is that this is a new measure that will help generate additional resources to tackle the challenges in Ghana’s energy sector, and it is also going to bolster Ghana’s ability to deliver on the fiscal objectives under the programme”.
