The John Mahama-led government, according to reports, will announce a new cocoa producer price before the new crop season.
The new crop season starts on August 7, 2025, and Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the Finance Minister, is expected to announce a new price after earlier announcements by President Mahama.
John Mahama revealed his administration is committed to ensuring that cocoa farmers in Ghana receive at least 70% of the world market price for cocoa.
Ghana Cocoa Board COCOBOD CEO Dr Randy Abbey also announced, some months ago announced that a new cocoa producer price will be revealed in August 2025, surpassing the Ivory Coast’s price.
CEO Dr Randy Abbey stated, “President John Mahama, the desire he has is that farmers must have profits, but we must also let you know the truth.
What I can tell you is that the president this year season will be open in August 2025 2026 and we are going to give a new producer price and the new producer price will be more than that of Ivory Coast”, he added.
He also expressed concern about a large quantity of cocopeat left to rot in the Sewhi Boako cocoa station in Sefwi Wiaso Municipality.
In a Facebook post some months ago, Mr Opoku the Agric Minister announced that the government will offer cocoa farmers 70% of the world market price for their produce, exceeding the initially proposed 60%.
He stated, “Since 2023, CPC’s production has been on a downward trend. Despite having a processing capacity of 64,500 tonnes, the company produced only 6,614 tonnes in 2023 and 2,886 tonnes in 2024. This decline is largely due to reduced cocoa bean production, which has affected supply to the processing company,” he stated.
“To address this challenge, I announced the government’s decision to exceed the initial 60% proposal and offer cocoa farmers 70% of the world market price. This increase is intended to motivate farmers, boost production, and further cement Ghana’s standing as the world’s second-largest producer of cocoa”, he added.
Meanwhile, Dr Randy Abbey, in a recent interview, noted that the recent appreciation of the cedi diminished the rise of the cocoa price per ton, which is set to rise substantially.
“What we are seeing now is a situation where global prices are high, and that would normally translate into higher incomes for our farmers. But with the cedi appreciating sharply, the gains could be reduced when translated into Ghana cedi”, he stated.
