Justin Kodua Frimpong, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has stated that Jean Mensa lead the Electoral Commission, lacks principles.
He revealed that he cannot defend the Electoral Commission leadership against attacks from the NDC Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia.
The NPP General Secretary is quoted by JOY NEWS to have stated, “Given current events, the EC lacks principles, and I can’t defend it against Asiedu Nketia’s claim that its leadership is unfit for purpose”.
Justin Kodua’s comments come on the back of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana announcing that it will conduct a rerun of the Parliamentary Election in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency.
Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman of Operations at the EC, in a press release dated July 2, noted that the decision was reached following consultation between the NDC and the NPP on July 1, 2025.
The EC has decided to rerun the election in 19 of the 37 polling stations, citing that although the scanned results from these stations were approved by both party agents, they lacked verification by the Presiding Officers.
The rerun in Ablekuma North is scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025.
However, Justin Kodua asserted that the NPP won the Ablekuma North Constituency with a margin of 414 votes.
He boldly stated that the electoral commission’s decisions are unjust and should act in accordance with the facts and evidence presented during the electoral process.
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, July 8, Justin Kodua stated, “For us in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) resolute and we know that our candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, won the elections with a margin of 414 votes. This is based on facts and figures. Yesterday, when the National Executive Committee met, we said that under no circumstances will we be intimidated.
“Under no circumstances will we go for a rerun. We will not go for any rerun. The New Patriotic Party will not go for any rerun. We have won the elections. What we are asking the Electoral Commission to do is to follow the court’s directive to finish the collation and declare our candidate, Akua Afriyie, as the MP for Ablekuma North,” the NPP General Secretary declared.
Meanwhile, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been on a campaign against the Jean Mensa-led Electoral Commission (EC).
The NDC Chairman noted that the entire leadership of the Electoral Commission must go; they are not fit for purpose.
According to Asiedu Nketia, the Electoral Commission’s handling of recent electoral matters, particularly the unresolved parliamentary election in Ablekuma North, shows an institutional failure.
Speaking on JOY NEWS, Asiedu Nketia stated, “There has to be a change… The three top leadership must all go. They have managed the commission so badly”.
“You cannot still be having an election that will go into a stalemate. There is no anticipation of any stalemate in our laws unless people don’t want to do their work well… It’s a clear case of negligence or inability to perform its functions,” he stated.
He added, “Six months on after the election, and we still don’t have an elected MP. That must tell you something is wrong”.
“This commission, as presently constituted, took over the reins of the Electoral Commission, and they have never done a satisfactory election… First was SALL. A whole constituency went unrepresented for four years. Now, Ablekuma North. And the Ayawaso West by-election? Everything has been messed up,” he added.
Asiedu Nketia further added, “Resetting the EC means bringing it back to an institution that is fit for purpose. The way it is existing now, it is not fit for purpose.”
“If in any serious country we want to maintain this type of Electoral Commission, then I don’t know what the country is about.”
