Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the Mayor of Accra, has broken his silence on a viral video of him in a heated confrontation with an MTTD police officer following reports by some road users.
According to Michael Kpakpo Allotey, he is not after the police but only to ensure that the right things are done.
He further rendered an apology over yesterday’s confrontation with a police officer at the Accra CBD, clarifying that the collective goal is to ensure that things are done rightly in the country.
Speaking in a video, the Accra Mayor stated, “An incident happened yesterday between the mayor and the police. I’m not after the police but just trying to let people do the right thing.
“You can see today is the day two of the ‘move from the streets’ program. You can see today, I’m back here again, and it’s the same place where the incident happened. Because the police were not doing the right thing, the people are still here today and have parked their cars,” explained.
“Things must change. We are resetting Ghana and Accra. If anybody thinks what I did was wrong, I’m apologizing to the Ghanaians,” he added.
His comment came on the back of his heated confrontation with an MTTD police officer following reports by some road users.
In the viral video, the Accra Mayor and an on-duty MTTD police officer faced off in a tense confrontation at the Accra Central Business District, after the officer was accused of allegedly receiving bribes from drivers to allow them to ‘load’ passengers at unapproved places.
In the video, the Mayor was heard ordering the police officer to remove his helmet, presumably to reveal his identity. However, the officer refused to comply.
“If I remove it, I will be violating the rules of the Ghana Police Service. If I remove it, it constitutes improper dressing, and so I can’t,” the officer explained.
The Mayor continued to question him, the officer attempted to respond, prompting the Mayor to shout, “Shut up! Who are you?”
The officer stated, “” am a police officer”.
The Mayor then accused, “You are collecting money from drivers.”
The officer quickly responded, “Did you see me collecting money? You can’t just say I was collecting money. Whatever you want to do, go ahead and do it.”
“Leave him alone, let’s go”, the Mayor stated, walking away after the officer’s defiance.
