Kumasi Market women have rallied their support behind President John Dramani Mahama for another term of office, should he complete their market projects.
The market woman affirmed that should Mahama complete the Kejetia Central Market Phase two and the Krofrom market, they will ask him to run for a third term.
Speaking during President Mahama’s ‘Thank You’ tour in the Ashanti Region on 16 July, the Kejetia market women stated, “Our only request to President John Dramani Mahama and his team, our job is market trading, we are begging them. I know they have gone to see the Central Market Phase two and I know they will go to the Krofrom market also.
We are pleading with you market trading outside is dangerous, it is a sad thing for us. We know that you are able to do it. Some people came for eight years they were not able to do it.
If you complete our markets for us, we will ask you to go for another term, and the traders will vote for you”, she boldly stated.
President John Dramani Mahama has, however, promised to complete the project by 2026.
He revealed that the project is 66 per cent completed.
John Mahama stated, “I decided to inspect the project to assess its progress and speak to the contractors. I have spoken to them, and they have assured me that the project is around 66% complete. They have pledged to accelerate work to ensure its completion next year.
This market will accommodate about 20,000 traders. To my traders, we have documented everyone who was displaced, and they will be given first priority when the market opens”, he added.
Prof Prempeh on Mahama’s third term claims
Prof H Kwasi Prempeh, the Chairman of the Constitutional Review Committee, has said the Supreme Court is not omnipotent or above the Constitution.
Prof Prempeh on Facebook on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, wrote, “Any interpretation of Article 66(1) to the effect that a President who has been elected to a second term can stand election again (i.e., a third time) upon the expiration of the second term is illegitimate and bogus.
Judges do not have the authority to rewrite, amend or set aside a provision of the constitution whose text and purpose, including from history, admit to only one meaning. Two terms mean two terms!”
He added, “If the Framers of Article 66(1) had wanted to say that a President cannot be elected to office as President ‘for more than two consecutive terms,’ thereby leaving room for a possible non-consecutive third term, they would have said so.
They would have said so, as they knew what is said in Article 246(2) of the same Constitution in relation to a District Chief Executive. There is nothing wrong with or unclear about Article 66(1) in its current form. Two terms mean two terms!”
Prof Prempeh added, “This matter must be laid to rest. The Supreme Court is not omnipotent or above the constitution”.
