Yakubu Abanga, the Third National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has boldly stated he will resign from his position if found guilty of galamsey.
According to Yakubu Abanga, he is putting his position on the line; if anybody should be bold and come out with evidence against him, he will resign.
Speaking in an interview, Yakubu Abanga stated, “I am putting my position on the line, that if anybody should be bold and come out with evidence against me, Abanga Yakubu Alhassan, that I am into galamsey or I have formed a taskforce to extort money from people and bring it to me in Accra, I will resign today from my position”.
He further described the allegations against him as baseless, malicious and a calculated attempt to dent my hard-earned reputation.
However, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, has directed the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate two NDC National executives.
The two have been identified as Joseph Yamin, the NDC’s National Organiser, and Yakubu Abanga, National Vice Chairman.
On Tuesday, July 15, 2025, the Attorney General directed EOCO to interrogate the suspect over their alleged involvement in galamsey activities.
The directive also calls for a probe into others found complicit, with specific reference to issues raised in Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s report on illegal mining.
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has stated that galamsey is now a national emergency.
Mahama condemned the environmental destruction caused by galamsey in Awaso, Dadieso, and Sefwi Anhwiaso during his Thank You Tour’ of the Western North Region.
The president issues a stern warning to anti-galamsey task forces who have been extorting money from legitimate small-scale mining companies.
