Prof Ransford Gyampo, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA), has revealed he still lives on campus despite being entitled to government accommodation.
According to Prof Gyampo, he still lives on campus by paying his own rent, although he is entitled to government accommodation.
He further revealed that he is still a staff member of the University of Ghana but has been loaned to the government of Ghana.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View, Prof Gyampo stated, “No, I still live on campus. I am entitled to government accommodation, but to the extent that I remain a teacher at the University of Ghana, I am now paying for my accommodation on campus at, commercial rate.
I was told something was being prepared for me, but I preferred to live on campus. I am on secondment. I am a staff member of the university on loan to the government. So, I live on campus and I pay a commercial rate for my accommodation”.
Prof Gyampo further revealed he does not drive government vehicles to any function apart from government work.
Prof Gyampo emphasised that he had his own car before he was appointed to the government and buys his own fuel.
He added, “I don’t drive a government vehicle to any function apart from sending it to government work.
If I am going to church, a wedding, a funeral or anywhere. I had my own car before the government appointed me, and so I buy my fuel. I came here with my driver. Anytime I am driving my own car, I give money that buys fuel.”
Prof Gyampo further revealed that he petitioned the Bank of Ghana (BoG) after freight forwarders raised an alarm.
He added, “Even though the dollar was trading at around GHC 10, some shipping lines were charging at rates as high as GHC 17. That makes nonsense of the efforts of the government to stabilise our currency.”
“We are so friendly, we allow foreigners to destroy what we’ve created… that doesn’t happen elsewhere. You must do business with respect to our rules.”
“Sometimes it’s power outages or machine failures, and these result in unfair demurrage charges. We’ve intervened many times to prevent shippers from bearing costs they did not cause”, Prof Gyampo added.
