Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, the Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, has mocked the Minority Caucus in Parliament.
According to Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, he has been told that the Minority Caucus’s other name is press conferences.
Murtala Muhammed further jabbed the minority for staging more walkouts in Parliament than their total number in Parliament.
The lawmaker argued that Patriotic citizens do not walk out, but they argue with reason.
Speaking during the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review debate on Monday, July 28, 2025, Murtala Muhammed stated, “It is because of the Goldbod that the economy is doing well. Didn’t you have Gold under your administration?
As a matter of fact, at a time when you had leading members of your party who were telling you that some ministers were not doing well and those ministers should be booted out, you all cowed into submission”.
Murtala added, “Today, you are talking about that. Mr Speaker, now my brother is telling us that they are patriots. As a matter of fact, you have staged more walkouts in this Parliament than your total number in Parliament.
You have staged more walkouts in this Parliament than the total number of your representation. Patriotic citizens do not walk out, but they argue with reason. Patriotic citizens do not just hold press conferences; in fact, I am told that your other name is press conferences,” he said.
“Mr Speaker, it is very clear that the NDC under President Mahama, and the Minister for Finance and his able deputy have shown our friends how it is done”, Murtala stated.
The NPP MPs’ latest walkout was a week ago, walking out on the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review in parliament to go and present a petition to the presidency on the menace of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
The NPP’s petition focus is the escalating galamsey crisis, which the Minority describes as an “ecological emergency” and “a national betrayal.
The Caucus cited data from A Rocha Ghana and Global Forest Watch showing a 17% increase in river turbidity and a 9% loss in forest cover in just six months.
They named the rivers Pra, Offin, Ankobra, and Birim as being under serious threat.
The NPP MPs also accused government and NDC officials of complicity, alleging an agreement between District Chief Executives, security officers, and illegal miners.
They are demanding:
“A State of Emergency in all illegal mining zones
A repeal of Legislative Instrument 2462, which they say enables illegal mining
Swift prosecution of all public officials found complicit
The formation of an independent national oversight body involving civil society, traditional leaders, and religious groups
The launch of a National Environmental Recovery Programme, focused on afforestation and river restoration”.
