Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stated he is devastated to learn of the passing of Ernest Yaw Kumi, Member of Parliament for Akwatia Constituency.
In a Facebook post on Monday, July 7, Akufo-Addo stated, “I am devastated to learn of the passing of Ernest Yaw Kumi, Member of Parliament for Akwatia Constituency. The legislator was adored and loved by party faithful and cherished by all who knew or shared acquaintances with him.”
“My deepest sympathies go to his family, the House and the good people of Akwatia Constituency, at this unimaginably difficult time.”
“May he find peaceful rest in the Bosom of the Almighty, until the Last Day of the Resurrection, when we shall all meet again.”
Ernest Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025.
The cause of death for the late Mr Kumi is yet to be officially confirmed.
Ernest Kumi was serving as a first-term member of parliament after his victory in the 2024 elections.
He secured the seat for the NPP in a closely contested election marked by allegations of vote buying, irregularities at some polling stations, with his victory ending up in the court.
The lawmaker’s death comes just weeks after the Supreme Court overturned his contempt conviction related to the disputed 2024 parliamentary election results.
The late Ernest Kumi, in February 2025, was found guilty by the Koforidua High Court after he defied an interim injunction barring him from presenting himself for swearing-in as an MP.
The Koforidua High Court issued a bench warrant for his arrest, alluding to his failure to attend court hearings and his disregard for the court’s authority.
Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Executive Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has confirmed the passing of Ernest Yaw Kumi.
According to the NPP, Ernest Kumi’s sudden and untimely death is a great shock.
In a statement on Monday, July 7, 2025, the NPP’s Eastern Regional Executive Committee stated, “This heartbreaking news has come as a great shock to the Party, the people of Akwatia, and the nation at large,” the statement said.
“May the soul of our beloved brother and compatriot rest in perfect peace,” the statement added.
They further extended their condolences to his family, the chiefs, and the people of Akwatia, and the NPP fraternity nationwide.
