A former parliamentary aspirant for the Oforikrom constituency, Henry Osei Akoto, has stated Ghana cannot work 8 hours and expect to compete in the global economy.
Henry Osei Akoto is quoted by GHONE TV to have stated, “ Ghana cannot work 8 hours daily and expect to compete in this 21st century global economy”.
His comments come following the official launch of the NDC’s flagship 24-hour policy.
President John Dramani Mahama at the launch stated that the 24-Hour Economy is not just about extending working hours.
According to John Mahama, the policy is about unleashing productivity, expanding opportunities, and accelerating exports.
Speaking at the official launch of the policy in Accra on Wednesday, July 2, President Mahama stated, “We have moved from slogan to strategy today. In 2024, the idea of a 24-hour economy captured national attention. It became a slogan of hope, a symbol that change was necessary and that it was possible”.
“Our task now is to ensure that the necessary change is with the implementation. This launch is not the end, but it is the beginning of a massive national mobilisation,” the President added.
“Let me be clear here, the 24+ Agenda is not just about extending working hours. It is about unleashing productivity, expanding opportunities, and accelerating export through well-structured and inclusive interventions.”
John Dramani Mahama further added that the 24-Hour Economy policy will be led by the private sector.
According to John Mahama, the government will only facilitate and not dominate the role in the rollout of the ambitious 24-Hour Economy policy.
He emphasised that his administration intends to act as an enabler, creating the environment for private enterprise to thrive within the framework of the 24-Hour Plus Programme.
John Mahama stated, “The private sector will lead the 24-Hour Plus programme. Government will facilitate and not dominate”.
“Any government funding in 24-hour plus will be catalytic, serving as seed funding for the 24-hour plus authority and supporting bulk infrastructure,” he noted.
Meanwhile, the 24-Hour Economy initiative is designed to encourage continuous, shift-based work in industries such as manufacturing, agro-processing, healthcare, transportation, and retail.
The Mahama government, during the campaign in 2024, described the 24-Hour Economy policy as a game changer.
According to the NDC government, the policy is expected to create more jobs, increase national output, and unlock value across supply chains.
