Henry Nana Boakye, the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), commonly known as Nana B, has stated that the passing of Ernest Kumi is a big blow.
Ernest Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025.
The cause of death for the late Mr Kumi is yet to be officially confirmed.
Ernest Kumi was serving as a first-term member of parliament after his victory in the 2024 elections.
He secured the seat for the NPP in a closely contested election marked by allegations of vote buying, irregularities at some polling stations, with his victory ending up in the court.
The lawmaker’s death comes just weeks after the Supreme Court overturned his contempt conviction related to the disputed 2024 parliamentary election results.
The late Ernest Kumi, in February 2025, was found guilty by the Koforidua High Court after he defied an interim injunction barring him from presenting himself for swearing-in as an MP.
The Koforidua High Court issued a bench warrant for his arrest, alluding to his failure to attend court hearings and his disregard for the court’s authority.
Speaking in an interview on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday, July 7, Nana B stated, “This is a big blow, it is a devastating moment for the NPP. The news came today when we were having a NEC meeting. The Eastern Regional Chairman of the NPP broke the news, and it was later confirmed by the Minority Leader. It’s a very unfortunate event,” he stated.
“Ernest is a personal friend beyond politics. He was a great guy—intelligent, young, and full of life. The last time I was with him was in Belgium when we attended a conference together. He was truly a rising star in the NPP.”
“It’s so sad… Our condolences to the family and the wife. I know she is going through a lot right now. We hope and pray that the good Lord grants her the needed strength to carry on’”, he added.
Meanwhile, the parliamentary seat of the late Ernest Kumi has been draped in red following his death.
