Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the NPP Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, has listed some of the factors that caused the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections.

According to Oppong Nkrumah, the Prof. Mike Oquaye-led committee came out with four factors that caused the NPP’s defeat.

He revealed that the Mike Oquaye-led committee highlighted the economic challenges in the country, the NPP corporate governance, internal conflicts within the party, and exclusion from decision-making processes.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View, Oppong Nkrumah detailed, “The Mike Oquaye committee was established to review our performance in the election. In every election, whether we win or lose, we do an introspection. The committee report highlighted four major issues.

“There were issues of governance policy, particularly on the economy, that were raised. It appears that was a major item. The majority of people said they either didn’t vote or voted against us because of their view that we had not been able to resolve the economic challenges robustly enough, in their opinion.”

He further added, “There were issues of party corporate governance. So you will find that things broke down on the ground in some parts because of issues of corporate governance. Corporate governance within the party had its own challenges.

“Number three, we had issues of operations—who has the power to do this and that. And finally, you had the perception at the party that when it comes to decision-making in the party, a lot of people are excluded. People who have to participate don’t participate, and the ownership of those decisions and advancing the course of those decisions suffer.”

Meanwhile, the Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon Alexander Afenyo-Markin, said the NPP lost the 2024 election due to a storm of adversity.

Afenyo Markin claimed the NPP’s 2024 election big defeat was not because of failure, but a perfect storm of adversity that no government in the Fourth Republic has ever experienced.

Speaking at the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Delegates Conference in Accra on Saturday, July 19, Afenyo Markin stated, “Yes, we lost the 2024 Election and in a big way. But let us be clear: this was not a defeat born out of failure. It was a perfect storm of adversity that no government in the Fourth Republic has ever had”.

“From the banking crisis that threatened to collapse our financial system, which we spent billions fixing, to the global COVID-19 pandemic that brought the world to its knees. Then came the Russia-Ukraine War, unleashing the harshest cost-of-living crisis in a generation. And through it all, we governed with a hung parliament and an opposition Speaker,” he indicated.

“No government in our democratic history faced this scale of compounded crisis. Yet, with Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the driving seat, we held the line,” he said.
