Kofi Bentil, the Vice President of IMANI Africa, has fingered Godfred Dame, the former Attorney General, for misleading the Supreme Court regarding the National Cathedral funds.
According to Kofi Bentil, Godfred Dame misled the Supreme Court into thinking state funds would not be used for the National Cathedral project when he knew otherwise.
James Kwabena Bomfeh, a former the Convention People’s Party (CPP), filed a case challenging the use of public funds for the cathedral but was dismissed.
Kofi Bentil stated, “In my view, the AG lied… I don’t know how to put this, but in short, this is one of the reasons why the present Chief Justice is facing what she’s facing. Some of us were disappointed that in the face of things, it seemed there were preconceived decisions”.
“My own brother, the AG, lied because he had those facts and went and controverted what Bomfeh said. And the judges, instead of taking judicial notice, looking at the facts in front of them, lined up behind the government in the face of things that we could all see.”
Bentil added, “The belief in the government was not founded. There was evidence in front of them, and it could be checked.”
Kofi Bentil speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, July 19, added that history will show Clergymen caused Ghana $97 million and left a hole.
The IMANI vice president detailed that the Clergymen will never be forgotten and will never be forgiven, as history will show they supported wrong in the name of God and caused Ghana almost $100 million.
According to Kofi Bentil, he does not doubt that some of the Reverend Ministers were not corrupt and still respect them.
Kofi Bentil added, “We have great respect for our Reverend Ministers, but we said it before time. We said do not lend your bible, your customs, and scholars to these politicians who are embarking on an ill-faithed and godless journey, we said it will cause problems. I don’t have a doubt that some of the Reverend Ministers were not corrupt, I still respect them”.
“But for lending themselves to this, for not speaking truth to power, and not standing for what I believe they knew was not exactly right, they will never be forgotten, they will never be forgiven, history will show that at a point like this, they supported wrong this in the name of God and caused this country almost $100 million, broke down building and left with holes,” he lamented.
His comments come on the back of Felix Kwakye revealing that documents reveal Ghana owes the contractor an additional $39 million for the National Cathedral, raising the total project cost to $97 million, far above the widely cited $58 million.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in Charge of Communication, addressing the media on Friday, July 18, 2025, stated, “Contrary to the widely held view that total payments and contributions to the National Cathedral project amount to $58 million, there is actually an additional outstanding payment of $39 million to the contractor.
When added, this brings the total cost incurred so far for the hole that sits at the site of the project to $97 million”.
Felix Kwakye stated, “The above audit findings rock the very foundation of the project and the work of the Secretariat and raise serious questions about the use of public funds”.
“The National Cathedral Ghana was registered limited by guarantee. In view of that, the Attorney General has been directed to take legal steps… and we expect that to be done in the coming days,” he said.
