The President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has told the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to carry their own cross on the Electoral Commission’s decision to rerun the Ablekuma North parliamentary seat.
Franklin Cudjoe noted that it is funny how the NPP spokespersons are today questioning why the EC is inconsistent.
In a post on X, Franklin Cudjoe stated, “Funny how NPP spokespersons are today questioning why the EC is inconsistent re Ablekuma.
These same folks derided IMANI and my person when we provided evidence of the EC’s misbehaviour. Carry your own cross, NPP”.
The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana announced that it will conduct a rerun of the Parliamentary Election in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency.
The EC has decided to rerun the election in 19 of the 37 polling stations, citing that although the scanned results from these stations were approved by both party agents, they lacked verification by the Presiding Officers.
The rerun in Ablekuma North is scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025.
However, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament, has also condemned the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to hold a rerun of the Ablekuma North parliamentary election.
The minority leader described the move as unfair and unjust.
According to Afenyo Markin, the EC leadership have caved into threats of removal and is prioritising their jobs over the country’s democracy.
Afenyo-Markin tore into the leadership of the Electoral Commission over its decision to re-run the election in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency.
He noted that Deputy EC Chair Dr. Bossman Asare had earlier told Parliament the commission was not considering a rerun of the election and only needed police protection to conclude collation.
Making remarks on the floor, the Minority Leader alleged that it appears that EC leadership have caved into threats of removal and is prioritising their jobs over the country’s democracy.
Also, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has stated that they will go to court to stop the Electoral Commission (EC) from conducting a rerun of the Ablekuma North Constituency election.
According to the NPP, the EC lacks the legal basis to call for a rerun in only selected polling stations.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on July 3, the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, stated, “The NDC knows that they lost the election. We are in the NPP, shall stop at nothing in our quest to ensure that the power that has been respected and upheld by the democratic rights and sovereign will of the people of Ablekuma North, as expressed by them on December 7, 2024, is upheld.
Therefore, we have caused our legal directorate to challenge the directive in court. We shall file in court and challenge the whimsical, capricious directive by the EC”, he added.
