The Deloitte and Touche National Cathedral project report, commissioned by the National Cathedral Secretariat, has shockingly revealed that the board collected GhC39 million in mobile money transactions.
However, the Deloitte audit report shows that only GhC710,941 out of the GhC39 million was found.
The National Cathedral Board claimed that about GhC38 million of that figure was failed or reversed transactions.
The audit report, however, suggested checks with the telcos could not verify the National Cathedral Board claims.
Renowned Ghanaian media personality, now presidential staffer, Bridget Otoo on X wrote, “The National Cathedral collected over GhC39 million in Momo, yet Deloitte only found GhC710,941.
The board then claimed about GhC38 million of that figure was failed or reversed transactions, yet when they checked with the telcos, they couldn’t verify that claim”.
Felix Kwakye, yesterday, July 18, revealed that documents show Ghana owes the National Cathedral contractor an additional $39 million, raising the total project cost to $97 million, far above the widely cited $58 million.
The Minister of State in Charge of Communication, addressing the media on Friday, July 18, 2025, stated, “Contrary to the widely held view that total payments and contributions to the National Cathedral project amount to $58 million, there is actually an additional outstanding payment of $39 million to the contractor.
When added, this brings the total cost incurred so far for the hole that sits at the site of the project to $97 million”.
Felix Kwakye added, “The above audit findings rock the very foundation of the project and the work of the Secretariat and raise serious questions about the use of public funds”.
The National Cathedral Ghana was registered limited by guarantee company. In view of that, the Attorney General has been directed to take legal steps… and we expect that to be done in the coming days,” he said.
Meanwhile, the National Cathedral Board has stated that they are disappointed by President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to dissolve the Cathedral Board.
According to the National Cathedral Board, they have been holding talks with the Minister for Local Government and Religious Affairs regarding the National Cathedral project.
The National Cathedral Board is quoted by JOY NEWS to have stated, “We are disappointed by the President’s decision to dissolve our Board, despite ongoing talks with the Minister for Local Government and Religious Affairs”.
