Mohammed Mubarak-Muntaka, the Minister of Interior, has ordered the Ghana Police Service to tackle galamsey interference.
Muntaka boldly ordered security agencies handling the ongoing anti-galamsey to arrest individual who attempts to interfere with their work.
According to Muntaka, security agencies must arrest a person who even names him in attempts to obstruct the fight against illegal activities.
Speaking at the 17th Regional Commanders’ Conference in Accra on Friday. Mohammed Mubarak-Muntaka stated, “If anybody calls you to say I have asked that you should let go of this operation, please ensure that you arrest that person”.
“If someone calls and claims to be me, let the CID take action and arrest that person. I will not send you into the forest only to call back and ask you to exempt someone. That will never come from me”, he added.
Also, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, the Minister in charge of Government Communication, has revealed that President John Dramani Mahama has told the galamsey task force to go after his brother if he is involved in galamsey.
According to Felix Kwakye, John Mahama instructed a task force to deal with individuals involved in illegal mining, no matter their status.
Speaking on TV3’s KeyPoints, on July 19, 2025, Felix Kwakye Ofosu stated, “President Mahama says even if his brother is involved in galamsey, they should go after him. Fighting galamsey requires political will, and President Mahama has that will”.
“President Mahama believes that fighting galamsey will rather enhance the fortunes of the party. 518 persons have been arrested for galamsey,” he added.
In a related galamsey news, President John Dramani Mahama has stated that illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, is now a national emergency.
Mahama condemned the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining in Awaso, Dadieso, and Sefwi Anhwiaso during his Thank You Tour of the Western North Region.
Speaking at a durbar in the Western North Region on Tuesday, July 15, Mahama stated, “We are alarmed by the environmental destruction that is reported across Awaso, Dadieso, and Sefwi-Anhwiaso, mainly due to illegal mining.
I must be honest, this is a national emergency. The national taskforce will continue its efforts to halt illegal mining in our forest reserves and on our water bodies,” he added.
The president also issued a stern warning to anti-galamsey task forces who have been extorting money from legitimate small-scale mining companies.
“I have also noticed the activities of the illegal anti-galamsey taskforces that go round extorting money from legitimate small-scale mining companies.
“I have requested the authorities to arrest and prosecute any individuals involved in this illegal anti-galamsey activity,” President Mahama warned.
