A former Chairman of the Church of Pentecost and Chairman of the National Cathedral Board of Trustees, Apostle Prof Opoku Onyinah, has said some people are trying to tell complete lies about the National Cathedral project.
The National Cathedral project was initiated in 2017 but was mired in controversy due to its high cost, the source of funding, and allegations of embezzlement of funds by its Board of Trustees.
It faced widespread criticism over the handling of its finances and execution, with several allegations of financial mismanagement and corruption surfacing throughout its development.
Speaking in an interactive session, Apostle Prof Opoku Onyinah narrated how he faced challenges when he tried to establish the Pentecost International Worship Centre (PIWC).
He recounted that people were circulating falsehoods even worse than the ones being circulated about the National Cathedral.
According to him, there are so many lies circulating about the National Cathedral and some comments are 100% lies.
Apostle Prof Opoku Onyinah recounted, “Some of them were very, very disturbing. I mean, especially those that are absolute lies. Some people try to tell complete lies, as they are talking about the Cathedral, and some comments are 100% lies about these things”.
“I said, No, I need to pursue what God wants us to do. So, I look forward to the Lord who has told me and who wants to do something, and I believe that at least the will of God will be done”, he added.
However, Felix Kwakye, on July 18, revealed that documents show Ghana owes the National Cathedral contractor an additional $39 million, raising the total project cost to $97 million, far above the widely cited $58 million.
The Minister of State in Charge of Communication, addressing the media on Friday, July 18, 2025, stated, “Contrary to the widely held view that total payments and contributions to the National Cathedral project amount to $58 million, there is actually an additional outstanding payment of $39 million to the contractor.
When added, this brings the total cost incurred so far for the hole that sits at the site of the project to $97 million”.
Felix Kwakye added, “The above audit findings rock the very foundation of the project and the work of the Secretariat and raise serious questions about the use of public funds”.
The National Cathedral of Ghana was registered limited by guarantee company. In view of that, the Attorney General has been directed to take legal steps… and we expect that to be done in the coming days,” he said.
Felix Kwakye further revealed that despite the damning findings contained in the Deloitte audit report, it did not cover the full scope of operations of the National Cathedral Secretariat and the project itself.
He revealed that the Auditor-General has therefore been requested to commission a forensic audit into the National Cathedral Project and the activities of the Secretariat.
Meanwhile, NPP Communications Team member Benjamin Gyewu-Appiah, commonly known as Benghazi, has claimed a man of God told him some NDC gurus will die because of the National Cathedral lies.
Benghazi claimed the man of God told him that if the NDC members do not stop their deception surrounding the National Cathedral, God will deal with them.
He boldly emphasised that the NDC gurus will die one by one.
Speaking on a radio show, Benghazi claimed, “A man of God called me this morning, he informed me that if the NDC members do not take in their dealings with the National Cathedral issues, some big men within the NDC, God will deal with them.
They will start dying one by one, and they will be surprised. I am telling you this. The senior pastor made me understand that there was no misappropriation in the National Cathedral Scandal”.
He added, “The National Cathedral issues, the NDC are using lies to disgrace these men of God in this country. The finding that has come out shows there was no misappropriation of funds. Am I lying true or false?”
