Kwasi Kwarteng, Spokesperson of the Kennedy Agyapong campaign team, has tackled the former vice president, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, over his poor kid comment.
According to Kwasi Kweteng, Dr Bawumia’s father was a Council of State member in 1992, so how can he say he is a poor kid?
Kwasi Kwarteng emphasised that political discourse must move away from personality-driven narratives and focus instead on leadership competence and electoral appeal.
Speaking on Joy Prime, Kwasi Kwarteng stated, “Dr Bawumia is saying he is a poor kid? I am of the belief that we should raise the discourse beyond some of these commentaries where we reduce it to personalities. We have a country to run, we have a country to build”.
“Somebody whose father in 1992 was a Council of State member is saying he is a poor kid. I don’t think I have much to say there”, he added.
Kwasi Kwarteng added, “Our position is that running a country goes beyond a rich kid and a poor kid. It has more to do with who has the leadership trait”.
“If you are a political party, your number one and supreme interest is to win power. No matter how novel, no matter the initiative we have, no matter how splendid your vision is, if you do not win power, you certainly cannot implement those initiatives”.
“For me, the focus and the conversation should be more about among all the candidates who wants to contest, who resonates more with the base,” he said.
His comments come on the back of Dr Bawumia tackled Kennedy Agyapong over his recent claims that he could raise $7 million with one phone call.
Kennedy Agyapong, who contested the party’s 2023 flagbearer race and remains a strong contender, pledged to raise up to $7 million to support grassroots organisations if the party agrees to restructure from the bottom up.
Speaking to some NPP constituency chairmen in Kumasi on Saturday, Kennedy Agyapong stated, “I don’t care if I personally lack funds. With one phone call, I can secure $7 million to help organise the party from the bottom up and make sure we do things properly”.
The former Vice President, speaking in a meeting with over 200 former MMDCEs, says poor people can also be the Presidents of Ghana.
His remarks come just days after Kennedy Agyapong told party constituency chairmen, he could raise $7 million with a single phone call to organise the party’s internal elections.
Dr Bawumia is quoted by JOY NEWS to have stated, “ I may not be rich, but I have rich ideas. Poor people can also be presidents of Ghana”.
