Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader in Parliament has confronted the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin over the whereabouts of the former finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
It will be recalled that Afenyo Markin revealed that Ken Ofori-Atta was traumatized by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP)labelling him a fugitive.
Addressing Parliament on Thursday, February 13, Afenyo-Markin stated, “He is undergoing some medical procedures.
Within a reasonable time, I’m sure he will come. I will also engage the Office of the Special Prosecutor, engage constructively, and assure him and his office that if there was any miscommunication, I, the leader of the Minority, am assuring him that the man will make himself available”, he added.
However in an address on the floor of Parliament on June 3, 2025, Ayariga questioned Afenyo Markin on the whereabouts of Ken Ofori-Atta.
He quizzed, “You promised to produce Ken Ofori-Atta in May. We are well into the month of June. Where is Ken Ofori-Atta? Where is he?”
“Perhaps, we should not be taking his promises into account because he never honours them but rather insists on others fulfilling their promises,” he said.
Mahama Ayariga’s comment comes on the back of the OSP also rejecting Ken Ofori-Atta’s request for a virtual session.
According to Kissi Agyebeng, Ken Ofori-Atta must present himself physically to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
Kissi Agyebeng added, “This office has always requested his attendance, and we have indicated clearly to him that we are unwilling to waive it. If we were amenable to taking any statement from Ken Ofori-Atta in absentia, we would have done so in February, and not waited till June 2, 2025.
“We want him here physically, and we insist on it. A suspect in a criminal investigation does not pick and choose how the investigative body conducts its investigations and the methods suitable to him and his convenience. We will not countenance this conduct, not in this case”, he revealed.
The Special Prosecutor further revealed that he has triggered a process for the issuance of an INTERPOL red notice, potentially subjecting Ken Ofori-Atta, to international arrest and extradition.
“About 30 minutes before this brief, I triggered processes for the issuance of an INTERPOL red notice for the location and provisional arrest of Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta in whichever jurisdiction, pending extradition or his surrender,” the Special Prosecutor revealed.
It will be recalled the OSP accused him of causing financial loss to the state in several dealings including the construction of the famous National Cathedral and Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA’s) – Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd (SML), the loss reduction contract between ECG and Beijing Jao and Health Ministry to Service Ghana Auto Limited/Ambulances.
