George Oduro, the former Member of Parliament for New Edubiase has claimed the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi went five days without food or water in EOCO custody.
The former lawmaker also refuted suggestions Wontumi was faking a stroke or illness to delay legal proceedings.
According to him, Wontumi’s visible weakness upon his release from EOCO custody was because he refused food and water for five days.
Speaking in an interview on Movement TV George Oduro detailed, “Even when he was going to the washroom, I had to support him along with one other officer before he could walk.
Honestly speaking, he was very weak because he had gone five days without food or water. He was genuinely weak”.
He added, “If you’ve walked with him before you’d know I’ve known him for the past ten years he doesn’t eat just anything, and he doesn’t eat everywhere. Even within our group, he doesn’t accept food from everyone. The person who was supposed to bring him food was told he had lost his appetite.”
Frank Annoh-Dompreh, a member of parliament for Nsawam/Adoagyiri also revealed that Chairman Wontumi was on a hunger strike until he was released from EOCO custody.
According to Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Chairman Wontumi has not eaten since his arrest on May 27, 2025.
Speaking on Peace FM, the lawmaker stated, “The truth is that he [Wontumi] says he is will not eat and has not eaten since his arrest. In fact, that is a decision he has taken upon himself and it’s a hunger strike”.
“The doctors have been tight-lipped and when we ask questions, they don’t provide any helpful information. What we know is that he was taken to the BNI clinic close to the Immigration head office for medical attention but as to how he is faring and the drugs being administered to him, we don’t know”.
They are not allowing his lawyers and us to even see and check on him. Has he killed anyone?” he added.
Chairman Wontumi was finally released from EOCO custody yesterday June 2, after meeting his bail GHS50 million conditions.
Wontumi was arrested by EOCO following a visit to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters on Tuesday, May 27 shortly after leaving the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra.
According to his lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi, Wontumi is expected to return to EOCO for further questioning on Wednesday, June 4, and again on Monday, June 9, 2025.
He made this known on Accra-based Neat FM’s morning show.
