Manasseh Azure Awuni an award-winning investigative journalist has sent a message to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to Manasseh Azure Awuni the NPP should allow their Ashanti Region Chariman Bernard Antwi Bosiako commonly known as Chairman Wontumi to plead his case in court.
He noted that Chariman Wontumi has been accused of criminal conduct and must plead his case in court and not with President John Dramani Mahama.
In a post on X, the investigative journalist stated, “Dear NPP elders, Wontumi is accused of criminal conduct. If he’s guilty, let him plead in court, not with President Mahama”.
His comments after Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie, the Member of Parliament for Effiduase Asokore revealed that senior members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will go and beg President John Dramani Mahama on behalf of Chairman Wontumi.
According to Dr Ayew Afriyie, the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman went overboard in some of his videos.
He claimed that the hands behind Wontumi’s ongoing investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) are bigger than the people who run the EOCO and the intelligence agencies.
It will be recalled Chairman Wontumi in an old video accused then candidate John Dramani Mahama of bonking his house help.
Chairman Wontumi in the old video speaking on his station Wontumi TV stated, “Lordina Mahama will never vote for her husband, what is even more shocking is that he is using his female daughter, Farida, someone will catch her and next, he will realize if you have a female daughter you have to hide her.
He is using his female daughter instead of going to beg his wife, what I even heard was that his maid, Lordina Mahama maid that she lives with when Lordina went to the market came to meet Mahama and the maid in bed”.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Face to Face, Dr Ayew Afriyie stated, “For Chairman Wontumi’s case, we’re going to beg. The hand behind this is bigger than the people who run the EOCO and the intelligence agencies. I will put it at the doorstep of President Mahama.
Wontumi went overboard in some of his videos. And I played a lot of them to show him on June 9. I told him we will go and beg, if we have to kneel down in front of President Mahama, and we will tell him that for these videos, he [Wontumi] crossed the line,” he stated.
Chairman Wontumi was finally released from EOCO custody on June 2, after meeting his bail GHS50 million conditions.
Wontumi was arrested by EOCO following a visit to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters on Tuesday, May 27 shortly after leaving the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra.
According to his lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi, Wontumi is expected to return to EOCO for further questioning on Wednesday, June 4, and again on Monday, June 9, 2025.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem-Sai has revealed that Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi is under investigation for fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.
Justice Srem-Sai also revealed that Wontumi is also being investigated for an International organised crime scheme.
The Deputy Attorney General noted that EOCO is assiduously working with our international law enforcement partners on the second strand of criminal investigations.
According to Justice Srem-Sai, the ongoing investigation is being handled by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), with asset recovery efforts already underway to secure suspected proceeds of crime.
