The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has commended businessman Ibrahim Mahama for mentoring and supporting his son, Prince Oheneba Nana Kwaku Duah, in establishing his path in the mining industry.
Speaking at the Global Mining Summit held in Accra on Monday, June 2, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II stated, “Thank you, Excellency the President, for allowing me to be President of Ghana for the next 30 minutes or so, thank you very much for the honour”.
My son who is organising this mining in motion was trained by his uncle Sam Jonah and his brother Ibrahim Mahama, they trained him and looked after his school and everything and I see the reason why he is into mining. Ibrahim influenced him”, he added.
The Asantehene in his speech further called on sustained action to halt the illegal activities.
“The pollution of our water bodies, the destruction of our forests and the degradation of our virgin lands cannot be allowed to continue unchecked. It cannot be denied that the cocktail of regulatory failures, political miscalculation and corruption has combined to make the curbing of the menace more challenging.
We have the opportunity to calmly dissect the policy options and tools available to deal with the problem,” he said.
He added, “The emergence of the new Goldbod is a creative initiative we need for the rise of the industry, increasing the prospect for more investment and higher yields. It injects a new urgency to the challenges we are trying to address”.
Meanwhile, President Mahama has stated his government has successfully removed illegal miners from eight out of nine forest reserves previously designated as no-go zones.
