Rev John Ntim Fordjour, the Member of Parliament for Assin South and former Deputy Minister of Education, has fired shots at the John Mahama-led NDC government for calling on the Police SWAT to disperse unpaid teachers picketing at the Ghana Education Service headquarters.
The lawmaker criticised the Mahama government for calling the SWAT team on teachers who were peacefully demanding their unpaid salaries.
On Monday, June 23, 2025, the aggrieved teachers gathered at the GES headquarters to demand explanations over 10 months of unpaid salaries and delays in the issuance of staff identification numbers.
The Police were later deployed to disperse the unpaid teachers picketing, with some teachers lamenting about the ill treatment meted out to them by the Police Officers.
In a post on X, Rev John Ntim Fordjour wrote, “Under President Mahama, POLICE SWAT is called on unpaid teachers to heckle them out of Ghana Education Service HQ for simply demanding their lawful pay. What crime did they commit to face such humiliation?
What happened to the dignity of teachers? Insensitive and intolerant govt”.
Meanwhile, Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that efforts are underway to resolve concerns raised by newly posted teachers who picketed on Monday, June 23, over delays in salary payments and staff ID issuance..
According to the GES, the Ministry of Education has requested an extension of the expired financial clearance from the Finance Ministry.
In a related development, the aggrieved teachers have suspended their picketing after GES following assurances from the Ghana Education Service (GES) that their outstanding salaries will be paid by the end of July.
