Francis Addai-Nimoh, a former flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has stated the party’s rushed approach to holding the presidential primaries on January 31, 2026, is a recipe for conflict and potential collapse.
According to Francis Addai-Nimoh, there are so many things the NPP needs to do before the election including the appointment of regional executives.
Speaking on UTV Francis Addai-Nimoh stated, “This gives us the entire period from January to December to elect a flagbearer. In 2024, we selected our flagbearer on October 18, in line with the constitution”.
“There are many things that need to be done. This appears to be a top-down approach, we still need to elect regional executives.
“Is this a top-down approach, a bottom-up approach, or a blend of both? This rushed process is a recipe for conflict and potential collapse,” he cautioned.
Davis Ansah Opoku, the Member of Parliament for Mpraeso has also stated the NPP’s January 2026 flagbearer primary does not make sense or add up.
According to Davis Ansah Opoku, the timeline is premature and disconnected from ongoing internal reforms.
“How do you put into motion a presidential campaign when the party’s base is about to change?” Are they to campaign to the existing five executives or the incoming seven?”, he quizzed.
Opoku emphasised, “We’re not just electing a political leader. We want to build a strong party that can carry any presidential candidate to victory”.
“This level of scheming hasn’t helped the NPP. The grassroots are tired they want to see a stronger party, not glorification of individuals”.
“The least the party can do is to provide a fair process. This rush, ahead of a national conference that could reshape the constitution of our party, is wrong,” he said.
Speaking in an interview on Citi News, Davis Ansah Opoku on the side of the Bryan Acheampong team stated, “The date that has been set, January 31st, 2026, it doesn’t really add up, it doesn’t make sense”.
Meanwhile, the main front runners for the NPP’s flagbearer position are Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Minister for Agriculture Bryan Acheampong, and former Minister for Education Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum.
