A video has surfaced of an illegal miner commonly known as galamseyer going down on his knees and pleading with President John Mahama to intervene to allow continue with their work.
According to the galamseyer, galamsey is their only means of livelihood and family support.
He pleaded with John Mahama to tell the soldiers to let them work.
Speaking in a self-recorded video, which has since gone viral, the galamseyer stated, “Your Excellency John Dramani Mahama, please talk to your soldiers, galamsey, this is the only job we have to survive and take care of our families. Some of us are using it to cater for their siblings at the University and Nursing trainees, if not for this job, where would we go? Unless we go and steal, but that is not good.
We are begging, this is what is helping us if we stop, what are we going to do? Galamsey is helping us, so talk to the soldiers for them to leave us to work, and I am not sure galamsey can be stopped in Ghana because we are not the only people doing it.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service, some days ago arrested 23 suspects and disabled 64 Changfan mining machines during a series of operations targeting illegal mining in the Western Region.
