Yaw Asani Tano, the National Organiser of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) has boldly claimed the suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo was NPP’s long-term strategy for protection.
According to Yaw Asani Tano, the NPP sought to maintain influence over the judiciary even after leaving office with the appointment of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
He boldly asserted that Justice Gertrude Torkornoo was the NPP’s last protective cover who is being removed.
Speaking in an interview on Peace FM, Yaw Asani Tano claimed, “If you look at their seniority system, it was not her time to be Chief Justice. She was elevated due to her age and the longer period until her retirement. That’s a long-term strategy. Even if the NPP is out of power, she will still be there.
The last protective cover of the NPP is what is being removed”, he boldly claimed.
Meanwhile, the Apex Court has struck out the injunction application filed by suspended Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
The suspended Chief Justice sought to stop the work of the Pwamang Committee, currently hearing the three petitions for her removal.
On Wednesday, May 28, 2025, the five-member panel hearing the injunction application dismissed it by a unanimous decision.
The panel was chaired by the Acting Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, Justice Omoro Amadu Tanko, Justice Yonny Kulendi, Justice Henry Kwofie, and Justice Richard Adjei Frimpong.
The suspended CJ in her affidavit alleged inhumane treatment, which violated her dignity, and described the ongoing proceedings as a “mockery of justice” and a “ruse” aimed at unjustifiably removing her from office.
The apex court ruled that the contents of the affidavit referred to events that occurred before the committee investigating the petitions for her removal — proceedings which, by law, are expected to be held in camera.
The Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem Sai objected and argued that the supplementary affidavit violated Article 146(8) of the Constitution. That provision mandates that proceedings concerning the removal of justices be conducted in private with the five-member panel of the court upholding an objection.
Justice Srem Sai emphasized that the suspended Chief Justice disclosing aspects of the committee’s deliberations breached the constitutional requirement.
Godfred Yeboah, the former Attorney General and legal counsel for Justice Torkonoo however claimed the affidavit was submitted within a judicial forum and not disclosed to the general public.
However, the Supreme Court held that the matters of the affidavit indeed violated the secrecy provisions under the Constitution and accordingly threw out the injunction.
