A former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Obiri Boahen has fired shots at the former NPP National Chairman Freddie Blay over his recent comments claiming President Mahama could be eligible for a third term in office.
According to Nana Obiri Boahen, Freddie Blay must read and stop making unnecessary noise and wasting people’s time.
Speaking in an interview on Sompa FM, Obiri Boahen said, “He should go and read the 1964 referendum. He should stop making the unnecessary noise and wasting our time. he should let our ears rest.
“There is no need for interpretation. You don’t go to the Supreme Court for interpretation on this. If he wants, he should go with Mahama to the court to seek an interpretation that Mahama wants to contest again but I am saying Mahama cannot contest again. The law is very clear”, he added.
Nana Obiri Boahen further fired shots at President Mahama, “Mahama should not even nurse this idea. If that is the reason they want to sack the Chief Justice, then no matter what…she might go. “
“They should go back to the history books and look at what happened with Kwame Nkrumah and Acheampong what was the end result?”
“Freddie Blay should stop wasting our time. He should let our ears rest. This has to do with common sense: if you go for two terms as president, you cannot contest again.
“…if it is not about greed and selfishness Mahama wouldn’t even think about this”, he added.
Freddie Blay in his comment stated the Supreme Court may interpret the law to allow President Mahama to run for a third term but the ultimate decision lies with the Ghanaian electorate.
According to Freddie Blay, if the apex court interprets the constitution to permit Mahama to run again, he personally has no objection.
Speaking in an interview on Oyerepa FM on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, Blay stated, “The law is in the bosom of the judges,” Blay remarked, adding, “If it goes to the Supreme Court—which has the exclusive judicial right to interpret the Constitution—and that body decides that what it means by two terms is conservatively this or that, I don’t have a problem with it.”
“The law court does not vote for a president. The individuals who constitute a panel and may look at a case have only one vote each. It is the people of this country who will vote”, he emphasized.
The NPP have accused the NDC and John Mahama of plotting to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo to enable President John Dramani Mahama to contest for a third presidential term.
According to the NPP, some individuals are allegedly planning to interpret Article 66(2) of the Constitution in a way that implies the two-term limit applies only to two successive terms.
