Salam Mustapha, the National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has told President John Mahama to sack the Kwabena Mintah Akandoh the Minister of Health.
According to Salam Mustapha, Mintah Akandoh has poorly handled the strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).
The health workers initiated a strike on June 2, 2025, in protest against the government’s failure to implement an agreement signed with the previous Akufo-Addo administration.
The GRNMA grievances include the non-payment of critical allowances, such as responsibility, uniform, and non-basic allowances, which collectively amount to millions of cedis owed over time.
According to Salam Mustapha, Mintah Akandoh who is not a health professional, must learn how to manage the health sector.
Speaking on Peace FM, Salam Mustapha stated, “When you are appointed as a Minister of Health or Education, you need a great deal of tact to manage the sector.
If he doesn’t consult his colleague Haruna Iddrisu to learn how he is managing the education sector, and begin to apply the same approach in health, he will be badly disgraced because it is an area that demands diplomacy and sensitivity”.
“During his speech at the swearing-in of ministers, the President warned that he would not tolerate arrogance among his appointees. But the sad truth is that many of them are indeed arrogant.
Is the President not aware of the conduct of some of his ministers? He must take action.
Otherwise, we might wake up one day to discover that half of Ghanaians have died, judging by how pompous and indifferent the minister has been,” Mustapha added.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has announced the suspension of its nationwide strike.
The GRNMA has directed members to resume normal shifts from Saturday 14 June.
On Friday, June 13, 2025, a statement issued by the leadership of the Association stated the decision to suspend the industrial action was influenced by the pleas of Ghanaians and the intervention of Parliament’s Health Committee.
They described the meeting with the Parliament’s Health Committee on Thursday, June 12 as very fruitful.
The GRNMA in a statement stated, “We are nurses and midwives trained to provide essential health services to the Ghanaian population. Matters affecting us which are brought formally to the attention of the employer must be treated with the urgency it deserves and in good faith”.
“As a result, the GRNMA’s industrial action initiated on 2nd June 2025 is hereby suspended pending the outcome of a follow-up meeting scheduled for 26th June 2025,” they added.
