Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the former vice president and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate in the 2024 elections, has made a bold declaration.
According to Dr Bawumia, President John Dramani Mahama is going to hand over power to him in January 2029.
Dr Bawumia is quoted by GHONE TV to have stated, “President Mahama will hand over power to me in 2029”.
In a related story, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has stated that if religion was the cause of the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 election, he would have stepped aside.
According to Dr Bawumia, it is not possible for people to claim the 4.7 million votes he got in the 2024 election were just from Muslims.
Speaking during the NPP Constituency Chairmen Caucus Conference in the Ashanti Region on Saturday, June 21, 2025, Dr Bawumia detailed, “It is very, very important that we don’t allow people to come in with explanations that are not factual, that are made up, and that divide our party”.
“We are a united party, encompassing people from all ethnic groups and all religions. We are part of the elephant family. We must not allow people, for the sake of political advantage, to tear us apart as a party. I am saying this because people are going religious and tribal. That is dangerous for the NPP and very dangerous for us,” he cautioned.
Dr Bawumia emphasised. “My 4.7 million votes, was it only Muslims who voted for me? It’s not possible. They were all different voters. When President Kufuor lost, did we say it was religion? When Nana Akufo-Addo lost, did we say it was religion? That is not a factor. People want to make it a factor for political reasons”
“If that was the case, I wouldn’t have contested at all. I would have stepped aside because I’m not a selfish person. I value the party. I will not jeopardise the ability of the party to win the 2028 election. It’s too important. I would have stepped aside,” Dr Bawumia added.
Meanwhile, Martin Kpebu, a private legal practitioner, has the New Patriotic Party (NPP) fielding Dr Mahamudu Bawumia again in 2028 would hand the National Democratic Congress (NDC) an easy win.
The private lawyer aimed the NPP’s proposed flagbearer election timeline for early 2026, arguing that it smacks of top-down manipulation.
According to Kpebu, Ghana as a country has seen enough of old men as leaders.
Martin Kpebu emphasised that Dr Bawumia will be a 69-year-old president in 2032, and the Gen Z and Gen Alpha voters are not going to rally behind that.
Speaking on TV3 on Saturday, Martin Kpebu detailed, “When you look at the way the party is pushing Bawumia forward, it signals that they want the grassroots to just play along. It’s a calculated attempt to preserve the system that benefits the elite”.
“Who wants a 69-year-old president in 2032? The Gen Z and Gen Alpha voters are not going to rally behind that,” he asserted.
