Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, a former Minister of Education has revealed he was summoned to the National Intelligence Bureau(NIB) for questioning.
Napo revealed that he has been visiting the National Intelligence Bureau to respond to inquiries regarding his tenure in the previous Akufo-Addo Bawumia government.
The former NPP running mate in the 2024 election stressed the importance of accountability for persons of public office.
According to Dr Opoku-Prempeh, as a law-abiding citizen who once held high public office, he could not decline the NIB’s invitation especially as he has a clear conscience.
Speaking in a viral video shared on X, Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh stated, “As for accountability, nobody can escape it. People don’t know that I’ve been invited by the NIB to assist in investigations into some issues during my time at the Ministry of Education. I couldn’t have declined that invitation.
In fact, I have been to the NIB twice. I’ve forgotten some of the issues; I can’t remember everything that happened while I was in office. That is why we have technocrats and others who assist in running the ministry and keep records. For the issues I clearly remember, I spoke to them during the invitation”.
He added, “I always say that those of us in politics should know that no condition is permanent. Today, you can be in power; the next day, you could be in opposition.
So politicians in power should always be mindful of what they do with the authority entrusted to them, so that if they are asked to account for their stewardship tomorrow, they can easily do so. I have spent my whole day today at the NIB, and I may go there again tomorrow.”
Meanwhile, some Ghanaians have reacted to the video saying, “The election defeat has imbued some sense into this guy…never touch Kwame Nkrumah again! You hear?”
“This is the first time in a very very long time he has spoken like a statesman”, he added.
Another stated, “You Dey opposition Dey talk sense but as dem give you power then you Dey misbehave”.
One more Ghanaian added, “So are politicians now saying they should not be accountable? Are they expecting their bad deeds to now be overlooked by successive governments cos they too might be government some time? This is getting ridiculous”.
Additionally, another wrote, “If you chop the money some and do majority of the work, we Ghanaians don’t have problem. But dem give you contract, you no do, wey you chop the money too. Wontumi must be jailed”.
