The Minority in Parliament has called on President John Dramani Mahama and the Attorney General, Dr Dominic Ayine, to, as a matter of urgency, make a public statement on the concerns raised by suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The Chief Justice on Wednesday made her first public address on the ongoing investigations into three petitions calling for her dismissal, raising concerns ranging from breach of procedure, violation of her human rights, and a grand conspiracy to remove her from office without just cause.

Reacting to the development at a press conference in parliament, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah insisted that the two must address the CJ’s concerns.

The minority comments come on the back of the suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, revealing that she has received veiled threats that if she does not resign or voluntarily retire, she will be made to suffer.

According to Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, resigning is not an option, despite threats directed at her.

She emphasised that every step of the removal process being undertaken against me is being done in a manner that breaks every rule on how justice is delivered in the country.

Speaking to the media on 25 June, 2025, Torkornoo stated, “The final and fourth reason for this Statement is that I have heard on several occasions, from loved ones, persons who care, persons who may not know me beyond my public duties, and many who think that since it is clear that the current proceedings seem to be carefully staged to result in my removal as Chief Justice,  it would be best if I just retired or resigned, rather than subject myself to an ill motivated process. I have also received threats and veiled threats to the effect that if I fail to resign or voluntarily retire, I will be made to suffer some harm or the other”.

“I have also heard several commentaries in the media about how this process was born out of a stated political agenda to remove me and control the Judiciary, and that, it is a political effort that can only result in the charade of a hearing that is played out. I thank all those who have engaged in this conversation out of concern for my safety and well-being”.

She added, “Let me assure everybody that I do not seek to cling to a title or position. However, as a lawyer of 38 years standing, a Judge of 21 years standing, and Chief Justice of Ghana who has served in the rule of law all of my working life, I consider it my onerous duty and obligation to speak up concerning the administration of justice in this country.

The situation I have been confronted with has shown me a model of injustice that I would never have thought possible if I had not been exposed to it. This is why despite great personal discomfort, I have decided to marshal every effort, in law and leadership, to answer to this situation”.

Meanwhile, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, has stated that the Chief Justice Torkornoo, more than anyone, is aware of the platform that is available to address such threats.

According to Kwakye Ofosu, the suspended Chief Justice knows where to seek redress for her threats she claimed.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, June 25, the Government Spokesperson stated, “The Chief Justice, more than anybody else, perhaps in this country, should be aware of the platform that is available to address such threats.

If today, someone sends you a threat, you know where to go to seek redress in the matter, and that is what I will say about it,” he said.
