John Agyekum Kufuor, the former President, has called on the members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to choose competence, not tribe or religion.

The former president asserted that in a democracy, we don’t go for tribe or religion, but the individual.

He noted that the NPP will go out of operation if members do not stop the tribal and religious bigotry.

According to Kufuor, the NPP must stop religious and tribal sentiments as the party prepares to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

Speaking at the launch of the party’s new think tank, the Patriotic Institute, on Wednesday, June 25, Kufuor stated, “We are democratic and we uphold common humanity. Democracy doesn’t go in for tribe, religion and gender.”

“…if we want power, we want to present a person who will be convincing to the generality of the electorate. Can this man we are presenting help solve problems for the community at large, so the benefit spreads across the board for all?” the former President added.

He further added, “We may see that the way we have been brushed by our opponents from way back; oh you’re a tribal party. These days, we are even including religion. You do that and it comes from our mouths, then I tell you we are perpetuating it”.

Former president Kufuor’s comments come following rising internal tensions and personal attacks between aspirants.

Dr Stephen Amoah, the member of parliament for Nhyiaeso and a lead campaigner for Kennedy Agyapong, shockingly caused a stir over his recent comment.

According to Stephen Amoah, whether we like it or not, Christians hardly want to vote for a Muslim leader.

The member of parliament subtly aimed a dig at the former vice president and 2024 presidential candidate of the NPP, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking at an engagement with the students in Kumsai, Stephen Amoah stated, “Whether we like it or not, Christians hardly want to vote for a Muslim leader. It is a fact.”

“We all know—why are we lying to ourselves?” he asked.

“Acknowledge yourself and your problem, but we can find solutions to them, rather than saying [they don’t exist],” he concluded.

“If we do not change our minds and do not think critically to seek solutions through hard thinking, I’m telling you, we would go out of operation.”
