Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the former vice president has stated if religion was the course of the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 election he would have stepped aside.

Dr Bawumia asserted that if religion was to blame for the NPP’s defeat he would not have contested at all as he is not a selfish person and values the party.

According to Dr Bawumia, it is not possible for people to claim the 4.7 million votes he got in the 2024 election were just from Muslims.

He further emphasized that when Kufuor and Akufo-Addo lost people did to blame it on religion.

Dr Bawumia urged New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters against introducing religious and tribal thoughts into internal party discussions.

Speaking during the NPP Constituency Chairmen Caucus Conference in the Ashanti Region on Saturday, June 21, 2025, Dr Bawumia detailed, “It is very, very important that we don’t allow people to come in with explanations that are not factual, that are made up, and that divide our party”.

“We are a united party, encompassing people from all ethnic groups, and all religions. We are part of the elephant family. We must not allow people, for the sake of political advantage, to tear us apart as a party. I am saying this because people are going religious and tribal. That is dangerous for the NPP and very dangerous for us,” he cautioned.

Dr Bawumia emphasised. “My 4.7 million votes, was it only Muslims who voted for me? It’s not possible. They were all different voters. When President Kufuor lost, did we say it was religion? When Nana Akufo-Addo lost, did we say it was religion? That is not a factor. People want to make it a factor for political reasons”

“If that was the case, I wouldn’t have contested at all. I would have stepped aside because I’m not a selfish person. I value the party. I will not jeopardise the ability of the party to win the 2028 election. It’s too important. I would have stepped aside,” Dr Bawumia added.

His comments come on the back of Dr Stephen Amoah, the member of parliament for Nhyiaeso and a lead campaigner for Kennedy Agyapong has shockingly caused a stir over his recent comment.

According to Stephen Amoah, whether we like it or not, Christians hardly want to vote for a Muslim leader.

The member of parliament subtly aimed a dig at the former vice president and 2024 presidential candidate of the NPP Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking at an engagement with the students in Kumsai, Stephen Amoah stated, “Whether we like it or not, Christians hardly want to vote for a Muslim leader. It is a fact.”

“We all know—why are we lying to ourselves?” he asked.

“Acknowledge yourself and your problem but we can find solutions to them, rather than saying [they don’t exist],” he concluded.

Kennedy Agyapong the former Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central some weeks ago also shockingly asserted that the Churches spoke but the New Patriotic Party (NPP) did not listen.

The former lawmaker noted that the Churches spoke in their vote pattern suggesting Ghanaians were not ready for a non-Christian leader.

Kennedy Agyapong stated, “The churches spoke. In this church we are in, they spoke. I am speaking in parables. The church spoke but we did not listen and we have seen what has happened”.
